Drugs in Sports - 934 Words

Athletes that use drugs while performing in the Olympic games should have some type of punishment. They should not just be able to get away with everything. Even though not every athlete uses drugs while performing, any drugs that is, the ones who do should have to pay the price. When they use drugs while they are performing, they are risking their whole career, and even their life. Athletes should be required to take a drug test if they plan on performing in the Olympics. Athletes that use drugs should be punished in some kind of way. It is not fair to the athletes that are true to themselves and their teams: they will punish their team, their life and their career. If an athlete has to go serve jail time, that is time that they are taking away from them to practice or do daily things. Like Phelps, he lost a lot of his endorsements. If he didn’t get to keep some of them, he would be bankrupted right now. Some companies believed in him so they kept him around. We all mess up. If one has to go to court for getting caught with a performance-enhancing drug, they will have to pay the jail fines. Paying jail fines are not cheap these days. Marion Jones is the sprinter with a five-time medal wins in the 2000 Sydney Olympic games. Jones was caught using steroids. â€Å"Court records recently reviewed that seven years after she won three gold medals, the former millionaire faces a mountain of debt and legal fees† (Josey 50). It shows that even if one thinks that they are done with getting fined, it still is piling up on them. Jones has had to go to court to settle several cases dealing with he using steroids in the Olympics. She has had to sell everything she has to make sure that she can pay for all of her fines. She has sole all three of her house. She even had to sell her mom’s house to make money to pay for court cases. Using drugs while in the Olympics is not a good decision to make.
