Analytical Review of Fortescue Metals Group- myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theAnalytical Review of Fortescue Metals Group Limited. Answer: Introduction Financial statements provide two major things to the readers or its users. One of the major things is the statement of the profit and loss which describes the financial performance that the company has gained over the period and second is statement of the affairs which describes the financial position of the company as at the end of the period. The company that has been selected for the purpose of the conduct of the analysis is the Fortescue Metals Groups Limited. The annual report for the year ending 30th of June 2017 and 30th of June 2016 has been considered. The report has started with the introduction and follows with the start of the analytical review. Analytical review has been conducted with the ratio analysis. Ratio analysis includes the profit and loss ratios as well as the balance sheet ratios. After conducting the analytical review and detailing the results, the working capital management policies have been detailed of the company. It has been discussed with reference to the current ratio of the company and has been detailed whether it is as per the needs of the company or not. With these considerations, the report has been ended with the appropriate conclusion and recommendation. Analytical Results Net Profit has been at an increasing rate for the last three years from 3.70, 13.89 and 24.78 in the years ending 2015, 2016 and 2017 financial years. S. No. Particulars 2017 2015 2016 1 Net Profit 2,721,008,840.00 1,326,420,684.00 411,458,333.00 2 Revenue 10,999,739,989.00 9,806,086,722.00 11,264,322,916.00 3 Net Profit ratio 24.78 13.89 3.70 The sudden increase over the three years can also be treated as dangerous situations. It is because many of the companies have been collapse due to sudden increase in the business of the company. For instance Lehman Brothers, HIH Insurance Company and One Tel Company have all collapsed. The major reason of the collapse was the accounting errors and willfully manipulating with the figures of the financial statements of the company and generating the higher revenue of the company so as to provide the maximum benefits to the shareholders of the company. In the given case also, the company has generated very high profits, although no qualification has been reported in the financial statements, but there may be the chances that the company might have manipulated with the revenue and profit figures (Horngren, 2012). From the point of balance sheet, the retained earnings have the very significance in the analytical review. S. No. Particulars 2017 2015 2016 1 Retained Earning 10,910,036,401.00 9,504,443,845.00 8,052,083,333.00 The above figure shows that the retained earnings have been increasing with the increase in the profits of the company. It means that the company has been ploughing the profits back into the company and thus ensuring the shareholders that they will have returns in the future as they have expected. But there may be the chances that the company might have over reported the profits so as to gain the attention of the investors and will exit from the market once it gets filled in the same manner as other companies have done (Kaviyani, 2011; Zimmerman, 2014). Thus, from the above ratios, it is exhibited that the company is in better position for the few years to come. Working Capital Management Working capital management deals with the current assets and current liabilities of the company. The company is having the best working capital management policies. It is because the company has been receiving the cash from the customers at the high speed and accordingly is making the payment and after those payments, the company has been able to generate the positive cash flows from operating activities due to which there has been the net increase in the cash and cash equivalents (Premnath, 2012). Thus, working capital management policy of the company is better and good which in turn will help the company in maintaining the high liquidity in future. S. No. Particulars 2017 2015 2016 1 Current Assets 3,386,635,465.00 3,262,860,220.00 4,595,052,083.00 2 Current Liabilities 2,862,714,508.00 2,200,377,053.00 2,197,916,666.00 3 Current Ratio 1.18 1.48 2.09 Conclusion and Recommendation From the above report it is concluded that although the company is at good pace with the growth but there may be the chances of manipulation which should be checked with the regular reviews in order to avoid hurdles in future. It is recommended to have the framework within which the manipulation shall be avoided and sound internal control system shall be developed. References Horngren, C. Strategic Analysis of Agency Model †Free Samples to Students

Question: Discuss about the Strategic Analysis of Agency Model. Answer: Introduction The assignment deals with understanding the role of a business analyst. The role of a business analyst is to analyse the domain and the organisation in which work takes place. It documents the business and relates it to technology. The following assignment analyses the role of an analyst in core knowledge areas. The areas of focus include analysis planning, collaboration expectancy life cycle, strategic analysis and evaluation of solution. These areas develop the essentials of a business and allow it to maintain its competitiveness in the market. For the purpose of the assignment, a case study on Integrated Library System (ILS) is considered. It is equivalent to an enterprise resource planning system. The case study focuses on the migration of one library system to a new domain. The combination of a vendor-supported and customised system was done along with the original system of the library. Certain discrepancies were seen in the new system that led to the customization of the syste m. Every business needs to be analyzed based on certain factors that contribute to the success or failure of the business. These factors can be both external as well internal. These factors are important as based on it managers can formulate strategies that can help in the growth of business (Eva et al. 2014). The essential knowledge area for the business analysis is laying the foundations for proper planning, defining and completion of business analysis. Such an action is the responsibility of a project manager. This also includes the monitoring of the activities to ensure that every threat is taken care with the utmost significance. According to Fleisher and Bensoussan (2015), the monitoring of the analysis is done in order to understand the ways by which the work is being conducted. The monitoring is done after the planning and implementation of the strategies. The strategic approach helps in the proper analysis of the strategies and identifies any changes that are needed for the business. The monitoring of activities ensures that the plans are properly executed and the outcomes of these plans provide the desired results for the people. Hence, it can be said that in the case of ILS, the business analysis that is required is the proper identification and evaluation of the new model (Zott and Amit 2013). The acquisition module of the new ILS model needs to be either modified or replaced depending upon the ways it is adopted by the company. In order to do so, it is required that the managers monitor the technique carefully. However, replacing the acquisition module also needs proper analysis and monitoring so that a similar mistake is not repeated. Elicitation and Collaboration According to Bargiela-Chiappini and Nickerson (2014), business elicitation is the process by which managers gather requirements for the success of an organisation. The requirements can be collected from the customers, employees as well as the stakeholders. These requirements are essential in order to understand the ways by which business can be conducted by implementing required changes in the organisation. The requirements under the elicitation technique include analysing documents, conducting interviews, observation, process modelling as well as workshops. The feedback of the customers is collected via survey method in the form of a questionnaire that helps an organisation to understand the viewpoints of the target markets. In this regard, it can be said that collaboration is an important factor for any business (Gmelin and Seuring 2014). This is mainly because of the fact that the collaboration with the stakeholders helps in maintaining the strategies of the business. The ideas of the stakeholders prove effective in the success of a business. In the case of ILS, the libraries need to gather requirements to maintain the process of providing books to the customers. However, the main problem lies in the bar coding of the books. These bar coding can be done by process modelling in order to maintain stability in the identification of the number of books. The gathering of requirements needs to be done in such a way that there remains less pressure on the employees in terms of maintaining records. In this regard, the collaboration is also required in order to maintain the requirements of the stakeholders (Konat, Sahraoui and Kolfschoten 2014). This can be done by engaging stakeholders in the decision-making process that can help in the smooth functioning of the bar coding system. Requirements Life Cycle Management Holzbaur, Ross and Rothrock (2016) stated that analysing the life cycle of a product is important for success. This is done in order to predict the possible success rate of a product. A product goes through four stages that determine its level of longevity in the market. Similarly, in the case of requirements of a business organisation, the four stages exist that determine the longevity of a particular strategy. At the initial stage when the requirement is introduced in the business, employees begin to doubt its validity. However, with time the requirement reaches a growth stage that sets about in the implication of the tactics for the organisational benefit. During the maturity stage, the requirements reach its full potential and ensure that organisational success is attained every time with the application of the requirement. However, with time the requirement declines and new requirements are introduced. This is done in order to change the ways by which an organisation functions. The requirements life cycle needs to be managed to keep in mind the excessive use of a similar technique (Wolf et al. 2013). This is because rival companies can understand the techniques and formulate counter measures to gain an advantage. In the case of ILS, the requirements life cycle needs to be formulated in terms of books. Customers change the tastes of preferences depending upon the best sellers that are brought in the market. Hence, the requirement life cycle of one particular book can have a limited longevity. Due to this, the library needs to change its requirements every time keeping in mind the requirements of the customers. Hence, the life cycle can be managed effectively for the formulation of new strategies. Strategy Analysis In order to succeed in a business, every manager needs to ensure that proper strategy is maintained. The strategies depend upon certain factors that help in the development of a business. Resources are required in order to formulate a strong strategy that helps in the success of the business in a long run. Jenkins and Williamson (2015) stated that strategic analysis is referred to as the SWOT analysis. SWOT analysis is done in order to understand the internal factors that affect an organisation. With the help of SWOT analysis, an organisation can formulate relevant strategies that can define the competition it faces and focus on the environments in which the operations take place. In this regard, the strengths of an organisation can be used to formulate strategies that can convert the threats and weaknesses to opportunities. The SWOT analysis is an important and effective tool for gaining a competitive advantage over the rivals (Tan and Carrillo 2017). In the light of this statement, it can be said that ILS also need to conduct a SWOT analysis that can help it to formulate strategies based on the factors. These factors are essential in order to understand the essential factors that help in the analysis of the organisation. It can be seen that the strength of the library is the fact that it uses a vendor-supported and customised system. This is essential in order to formulate a strategy that can help in the success of the library. However, the weakness can be considered as the use of the new acquisition model. This is because time is required in order to bar code the number of books in an efficient manner (Rieu, Santorum and Movahedian 2017). Hence, strategies need to be formulated to convert this weakness into strength and create opportunities for improvement. Requirements Analysis and Design Definition The requirements analysis portrays the task that a business formulates in order to define the role of a business analyst. According to Hill Jones and Schilling (2014), the role of a business analyst is to structure and organise the requirements that are needed in order to form a competitive advantage. These requirements are identified during the elicitation process that formulates in the controlling of activities within an organisation. In the case of the use of any specific types of equipment or models, the requirements determine the design that is required for the proper usage of the equipment. Tao et al. (2016) stated that the verification is done based on the validity of information and the identification of proper solutions required for the development of an organisation. This helps in maintaining the goals of an organisation and likewise develops ways to improve the current position. As stated by Sharda, Delen and Turban (2013) the features of the requirements need to be releva nt and detailed so that problems are not faced in the future. In the case of ILS, the organisation needs to keep in mind the ineffective and the stressful nature of the acquisition model. It has already been evidenced that the new model is time-consuming and is not possible for one particular person to keep individual records of the books. Hence, it is essential for the managers to find out an easier method for the success of the business. The biggest flaw conducted by the manager is the fact that the equipment was not tested by the organisation. Hence, this led to the failure of the model and the proper application of the technology in the workplace. Solution Evaluation According to Krolzig (2013), in order to manage the operations of a business, the evaluation of solutions is an important factor. Solution evolution is considered as the assessment of existing and possible results that can be derived before a business is taken into operation. Internal, as well as external perspectives, are involved in order to understand the possibility of success of a business. In this context, it can be said that the perception varies depending upon the type of business that is being considered. Solutions of both these perspectives are referred to as business requirements. These solutions are generally derived from the feedback form of the customers as well as the employees working within an organisation. In this regard, the documentation of business requirements is needed in order to come up with a proper solution. Hence, according to Kim, Kara and Kayis (2014), it can be said that the evaluation of solutions can be faced with challenges that may hamper the growth of an organisation. A similar context can be established in the case of ILS. The organisation needs to maintain effective solution evaluation techniques in order to establish an easy business model. It is essential that the library facilities develop plans for the bar coding of books before implementing it in the organisation. This can help in gaining the required success for the formulation of strategies. Hence, in order to implement the acquisition model successfully, it is essential for ILS to make constant progress in the requirements of the organisation. Conclusion Thus, it can be concluded that in order to maintain a proper business, the role of a business analyst is important. An analyst needs to procure methods by which a business can be made successful. This can help in the proper formulation of strategies and help in the identification of opportunities for the business. The use of strategic analysis is an essential element for the identification of internal strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses can be used to create opportunities for the business. In the case of ILS, the library facility needs to analyse the acquisition model thoroughly in order to develop a comprehensive use of the modern technology. For this, the need of resources and requirements are essential in order to meet the specific demands of the bar code. Thus, an analyst plays an important part in the management of a business and its success in the international market. I could relate to many of the subjects that this book covered and could understand where the authors ideas originated. Not only can I see his ideas appearing in my own actions, but I also see them in males in their mid-forties to fifties. This observation supports the idea of us going from innocence to doubt and back to innocence. The first idea that stuck with me is the interpretation of the salmon and how it represented Christ. Because my thoughts on religion and god are so unclear in my life, it led me to interpret the whole situation differently and with different symbolism that is more adjacent with my life. I could still comprehend what the author was trying to say, but I couldnt relate to his interpretation. I can see how a boy might be introduced to something that is too powerful for him at the moment. The experience gives him a wound that is hard to recover from. For example, the act of ma king love is a wonderful thing if it is done in a pure environment. But, if a boy develops a relationship with an older woman and is not ready to lose his virginity, and the woman is pushing for it, he might enter into something that he is not ready to deal with. When a boy is put into an uncomfortable situation like this, he could receive wounds that could last for a lifetime. He will have been scarred by this woman and carry around a wound that is hard to heal and could effect the rest of his life. This explains how we enter the stage of aggression. I havent entered this stage yet, but there are a number of people in my life that have definitely been lingering in this area for a long time. I wait for the day when they move on. One of my gymnastic coaches is still in the stage of aggression, although he seems to have harnessed it very well. He is working both as a lawyer and a coach. This combination is successful for him because he uses his aggression in court to help prove a point and in gym he really urges the kids on and pushes them just hard enough to get the most out of their workouts. I really admire him for his ability to manage his anger and never let it get the best of him, in spite of his high level of testosterone. It seems that during childhood, people develop through an intricate process of observing what their family and peers are doing and then trying it on for size to see if it works for them. Most of the characteristics that we take on, we later throw away, after discovering that they do not work for us. Many of the characteristics that we develop from this time remain with us for the rest of our lives. We continue to do things like a family member does or did. Some of the complexes that we develop when we are mere toddlers take us a lifetime to shed. It is during the whole stage of adolescence when we begin to doubt. During this stage we begin to find out who we really are. This process can only be achieved by sifting through the complexes we have developed, questioning them, and changing what we dont like. We build on what fits who we are. Although this process slows down, it still continues for the rest of our lives. .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .postImageUrl , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:hover , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:visited , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:active { border:0!important; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:active , .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u169a0cd6590fcf4a7d0bd4607ec86fbd:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Gulf Waar EssayRobert Johnson emphasizes that every human being has got to break away from their parents at some point in time, especially their mother-complex that lives inside each and every one of us. My Home of Yesteryear - Descriptive Essay

My Home of Yesteryear - Descriptive Essay In this descriptive essay, student Mary White imaginatively recreates her childhood home in the country. My Home of Yesteryear by Mary White Situated on the bend of a horseshoe-shaped dirt road that intersects a back country highway is the place I called home as a child. Here my elderly father raised his two girls without the help or companionship of a wife. The house is set back about 200 feet from the road, and as we saunter up the narrow dirt pathway, lined with neat rows of flamboyant orange gladiolas on each side, the tidy appearance of the small, unpainted frame house entices us to enter. Up the steps and onto the porch, we cant help but notice a high-backed rocker on one side and a bench worn smooth by age on the other. Both remind us of the many vesper hours spent here in the absence of modern-day entertainment. Turning the door knob and entering the parlor is like taking a step back in time. There is no lock on the door and no curtains on the windows, only shades yellowed with age, to be pulled down at nightas if you needed privacy out here in the boondocks. Dads big over-stuffed armchair is set beside the well-stocked bookcase where he enjoys passing a hot afternoon with a good book. His bed, an old army cot, serves as a couch when company comes. One lone plaque with the words Home, Sweet Home adorns the wall over the mantelpiece. Just to the left is a doorway, minus a door, beckoning us to investigate the aroma drifting our way. As we step into the kitchen we are overtaken by the rich smell of freshly baked bread. Dad is removing the loaves from the belly of Old Bessie, our coal-burning cookstove. He leaves them to cool in neat rows on our homemade plank table. Turning toward the back door, we see an honest-to-goodness ice box, and yes, theres a genuine silver quarter for the ice man to take in exchange for 50 pounds of dripping ice. I can picture him now as he snatches the tongs tightly into the frozen block, causing tiny slivers of sparkling ice to fly everywhere. Swinging it down off the back of his chug-a-lug of a truck and instantly throwing his other arm up to keep his balance, he staggers with his load toward the back door. Hoisting the block of ice into place, he gives a long, loud sigh of relief and drops the shiny quarter into his pocket. Stepping outside the back door, we suddenly realize there is no running water in the kitchen, for here stands the only water pipe around. The galvanized tubs, set upside down by the steps, indicate that here is where most of the bathing occurs. A little footpath leads us to a hand pump, somewhat rusty but still providing a cool refreshing drinkif we can prime the pump. As Dad douses its rusty throat with water, it gurgles for a minute or two, then belches back a flood of sparkling clear spring water, free from the chemicals the law requires of modern water systems. But the pathway doesnt stop here. It winds on out behind a dilapidated shack. No imagination is needed to know where it ends. As dusk approaches we must slip around to the front porch and relax as we enjoy a country sunset. The sky is absolutely breathtaking with its soft ribbons of orange and violet. The sun, ablaze with beauty, casts our long shadows across the porch and onto the wall behind us. Everywhere nature is praising its Maker and singing its night songs. Off in the distance the whip-poor-wills are just starting their nightly lamentations. The crickets and frogs join in while bats dart overhead in search of a juicy tidbit for breakfast. Bats, you see, begin their day at sunset. The house itself joins in the chorus with its creaks and cracks of contraction as the coolness of the evening settles around us. Indeed, a visit to the old homeplace brings back many fond memories, almost making us wish we could turn back the clock to enjoy a few moments of peace and innocence. Recession and Consumer Spending Habits in the Clothing Indusrty Essay

Recession and Consumer Spending Habits in the Clothing Indusrty - Essay Example They also spend in different ways due to the recession. As borrowing becomes harder, consumers are more likely to make spending sacrifices. â€Å"People are clearly starting to get a sense that things are not as easy financially as they once were,† said Peter Ayton, Chief Statistician at Mintel. Recession not only affects how much consumers have to spend, but also how they behave. This project investigates changes in womens spending habits and examines how they will change in the future. The project considers a number of essential questions. Will womens spending behavior change when the recession ends? Or will they revert back to their old spending habits? Will consumption be back to the same level as years past? Will women spend less, delay purchases or trade down to cheaper alternatives? Economic recession can be defined as a significant decline in economic activity lasting more than a few months (NBER, 2009). The United Kingdom has been in recession since July 2008. This was prompted by many problems, including: The increased levels of unemployment and high levels of personal debt, mean consumers are feeling the squeeze. During recession it’s a normal propensity of consumers to cut down on spending and save money. The decline in consumers spending is due to decline in consumer confidence levels. The decline in confidence levels may be caused by unemployment or a financial crisis. Therefore, businesses are forced to lower their prices to attract consumers. When prices decrease, consumer spending capacity increases. In terms of profit and human capital, the recession has negatively impacted many industries. Prominent among the industries hit by the recession is the clothing industry. The UK retail clothing & footwear market was worth an estimated  £48.55bn in 2007 (Clothing HYPERLINK "http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/594454"&HYPERLINK "http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/594454"

Media As Ideology, Culture, and colonialism Ch 2 Essay

Media As Ideology, Culture, and colonialism Ch 2 - Essay Example This is especially the case, when one considers the works of later Marxists such as Rosa Luxemburg who saw the media as a conduit through which the state attempts to mold the mind of the masses, in order to make the masses docile. This is especially applicable to state-owned media where ideas such as patriotism, diligence and religious ideals are always served to the public. This is always an artifice to stave off the revolutionary spirit from prevailing among the masses (Wasserman and de Beer, 385). At the same time, the definition and analysis of the media above warrants the rethinking of the true purpose or function of the media. While there are those who point out that the role of the media is to educate, entertain and inform, there are other thinkers in the 21st century who postulate that the role of the media is to inform, educate and to initiate and facilitate meaningful debate. While the former standpoint takes on a wider and less formal function, the latter takes on a more formal and stricter commitment to positive social change. As a side note, the passing of the media as channels through which culture and ideology are transmitted to shape consciousness specifically, in order to determine the behavior and attitude of the target population is also wide enough to include the presently online social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace and specific enough to limit the role of the media to the moderation of the target population’s behavior. The import of this is that not only is the public seen as part of the media, but personal responsibility is also invoked. This is because, since anyone can become part of Facebook, Twitter and/or MySpace (which are all part of the media), individual’s discretion goes a long way to determine how these avenues may be used to impact the target population positively or negatively. This also means that the media is seen as

Freud and the ideas of the Enlightenment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Freud and the ideas of the Enlightenment - Essay Example Sigmund Freud was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1856 in Jewish family background. His father was a freethinker while Freud was a vowed atheist. Freud is regarded as the most famous, influential, and controversial thinker in figure in psychology (PBS, 1998). Sigmund Freud has many works and theories to his credit that has helped in shaping our childhood, personality, memory, sexuality, and therapy views.  Indeed, Sigmund Freud has made immense contribution to the understanding of irrationalism. Through Sigmund Freud and Charles Darwin, irrationalism began to explore subconscious and biological roots of experience. Though he did not invent the theory of consciousness, Sigmund Freud introduced the wider public to the notion of the unconscious mind. He noted that unconscious is the source of our motivations for food or sex, artist, or scientist (Boeree, 2009). He theorized the idea that forgetfulness/ repression or slips of the tongue are not accidental but a revelation of dyn amic unconscious. This was an articulation of the concept of unconscious. Freud claims that human behavior relies on drives or instincts, which are the neurological representations of physical needs. He also theorized the idea that sexual drive was the most powerful shaper of a persons psychology, and that sexuality manifests itself from childhood. Indeed, he claims that young boys develop attraction to their mothers and develop hate towards the fathers and vice versa for girls. This refined the concept of the infantile sexuality. Additionally, Sigmund Freud devised innovative treatment of human dreams, actions, and cultural artifacts (Liukkonen, 2008). This innovation has significantly brought relevant input in the fields of psychology, semiotics, appreciation, anthropology, and artistic creativity (Thornton, 2010). Most of these fields seek to define irrationalism. Freud also classified anxiety that is a feeling that signals ego into realistic, moral, and neurotic anxiety.

Nationalism During World War One History Essay

Nationalism During World War One History Essay World War 1, the conflict which submurged the world between 1914 and 1918 left a massive mark on the 20th century, and shaped the world in which we live in today. Never before has nation clashed with one another on such a grand scale. Advances in weaponry allowed for the killing of soldiers of vast numbers. When the war clouds finally cleared, monarchies had fallen apart. New nations were born and the seeds were planted for an even greater conflict to engulf the world. A major contributing factor to the tension between great powers that led to the outbreak of the First World War was called Nationalism. Nationalism led to the outbreak of the War when countries wanted to show themselves as the most powerful and advanced society on the planet. When countries started to get nationalistic, they became to see themselves as superior, as proud, as dominant, became very compulsive as many became too proud of their nations. When the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand came about, thus tr iggered the World War and more and more countries started to get involve. The war changed the world and the society we live in today. During the 19th and 20th century, nationalism had spread itself all over Europe. All powerful nations such as Russia and Germany had strong beliefs towards the concept of supporting their own nation. When Nationalism was brought up, nations believed that their own needs must be met before those of other nations. These strong beliefs came to play a pivotal role as many nationalists became so proud of their nations that later on the nations that they struggled for it to become the richest and most powerful nation of all. The signal of national pride became a massive problem for the Austro-Hungarian Empire while they attempted to maintain order and peace within seize are of Bosnia. This power was put under threat due to the Slavonic peoples detest of the Austro-Hungarians and wanted themselves to be no longer part, and wanted to be a separate nation know today as Yugoslavia. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife was a major outcome of nationalism. The assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Serbian nationalists was an event which was caused by numerous factors which produced widespread shock across Europe. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassinated on the 28th of June 1914. The assassination occurred during the Archdukes visit to Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Archduke was targeted due to the general feeling amongst Serbians that when he would have been appointed the throne, Ferdinand would continue the persecution of Serbs living within the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Just moments after the two had been shot; the authorities arrested the killer, Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian student, who was believed to have been linked to the Serbian terrorist organization, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Black Handà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . After two days into the assassination, Austria-Hungary and Germany advise the Serbs that they should open an investigation to find the trail of the assassination . The Austrian government later on saw this as a chance to end the perceived threat from Serbia. Austria-Hungary issued Serbia with many ultimatums after the assassination, but nothing had changed. Afterwards, on the 28 of July, 1914, assured with German support, Austria had declared war on Serbia which swift shock and threat around Europe. Later on, Russia mobilized its armies in Serbiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s defense, which triggered France to join in with the Russians and the French. Germany took this as an act of war against the Austro-Hungarians and mobilized their armies in large numbers on the Western Front. Germany had invaded France through Belgium which their neutrality had been protected by the British. Later on, this was an excuse for the British to enter the war and sent many troops to France. As the British dedicated that no one power should dominate Europe, particularly the coastline facing the British Isles. Germanys actions therefore, drew the British away from its colon ial ambitions and towards attempting to stabilize Europe. Although the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered the begging of the World War, Europe has already been awaken up by the groups of nationalists and hatred been spread throughout Europe. On the other hand, many people had different views on how the Great War started. Many believed that the alliance system was the major cause of the World War. The alliance system is a group of nations joined together to support one another whenever backup is needed. Each nation made an agreement to support and help whenever their alliance calls out for help. In 1879, the Dual alliance which was made up of Germany and Austria, made another agreement with Italy, then was named the Triple alliance. France and Britain became allies in 1892, and later on Russia joined in. These three countries joined together and were called the Triple Entente, which was one of the most powerful set of alliance in Europe. Both alliances were very well armed and powerful, and when disagreement occurred within 2 countries, because of the alliance system, a small local war turned into the biggest war that our planet has ever seen. As Belgium was a land-locked country and was surrounded by the two alliances, B ritain agreed to protect it when a nation would declare war on them. After the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria declared war on Serbia. With the alliance system, countries declared war on each other as countries swore to protect their alliance system whenever war was about. To sum up, a small war between two countries spread all over Europe as alliances were made up to protect one another. To summarize, WW1 left a massive mark in the society we live in today. Many people had died from uncontrollable forces which were raging to show off their society. Nationalism triggered the World War as countries tried to show others what they were capable of. When nationalism spread itself around Europe, it angered many as many important figures were assassinated and left a massive mark which angered thousands. Nationalism led to the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand when he selected a Serbian national holiday to parade through Sarajevo, stoking nationalist distaste. When Ferdinand was killed, as a symbol of hatred against Austria and Serbia, since countries were allied within each other, a small local war became the largest and most dangerous war our planet has ever seen. Besides the assassination of the Archduke, there was another major cause which many people believed in. The alliance system gathered societies together swearing that if any help is needed, the other societies that swore to help must do their best to achieve their responsibilities. When two countries clashed into each other, they called in for help and alliances took place shortly after. World War one has left an indulging mark on the 20th century that will never be forgotten , even thousands and million years later on.

Hiroshima, The World Is No Lon :: essays research papers

Ideas of creating this first nuclear fusion reaction had been around for quite some time. Wanting to explore new levels of advancement in science technology were scientist all around the world, working to create, what was termed â€Å"Nuclear Fusion†. There had been a few attempts at making, if possible, the impossible dream come alive. The idea of splitting an atom, which contains neutrons, electrons, and protons, had been floating around in the scientists’ minds for as long as the realized existence of an atom had been there. When this great and unimaginable feat was overcome, the world shuddered and wept at its magnificence and it power. On August 2,1939 Albert Einstein wrote a letter to the President of the United States of America warning him of the advancements that him and his fellow scientists were coming upon. In his letter he described the possibilities of what they were about to create. He described all of his thoughts to the president, about what great things their dream could be used for, and what horrible things it could bring in its development. The first three physicists to create a nuclear chain reaction were Enrico Fermi, Italian-American; Leo Szilard, Hungarian; and Frà ©dà ©ric Joliot-Curie, French. Enrico Fermi was born in Rome on September 21, 1901. He contributed in the creation of the first controlled nuclear reaction. For his efforts he was awarded the 1938 Peace Prize. Being a skilled and intelligent man in his field of nuclear science, he was one of the many scientists selected to work on Loa Alamos, New Mexico on the American project to construct the first atomic bomb. Leo Szilard, born February 11, 1898 in Budapest. He encouraged and aided Albert Einstein to write the letter to FDR about the potential military use of atomic energy. Szilard also contributed to the creation of the first controlled nuclear reaction in 1939. Frà ©dà ©ric Joliot-Curie, born in Paris France, March 19, 1900. He ended up sharing the 1935 Peace prize with Irene Joliot-Curie, his wife. They were given this prestigious award for their work in the field of chemistry. During World War 2, Frà ©dà ©ric Joliot-Curie became part of the Communist party. In 1951 he was awarded the Stalin Peace Prize for his work in the field of chemistry. He Later died in 1958, only a few years later. There had been a secret rush in America to create a nuclear bomb.

Nature vs. Nurture Essay Example

Nature vs. Nurture Essay Example Nature vs. Nurture Essay Nature vs. Nurture Essay Things in life can happen from effect of heredity and environment. Nature, is from heredity, which is basically things that you get from your parents. Nurture, is the effect of the environment. Everything around you can affect you in both positive and negative ways. An example of a thing that is effected by nature is a talent. Things like musical skills are usually brought by parents. Reasearches has shown that parents who plays instruments will have children who has a musical talent. Lets take a musician for example, Bob Marley. He was a very amazing musician that most of the people love and respect. He composed tons of songs that people still like to hear today. He had a lot of kids, but the two most famous ones are Ziggy Marley and Damian Marley. Ziggy and Damians taste of music are the same as their fathers, which is reggae. Their lyrics also pretty much talks about the same thing, lvoe and freedom. Bob Marley might have influenced them a lot in this, which involves nurture, but the musical talents that Ziggy and Damian posseses comes from their father. An example of a nurture is a drug addict. People, usually teenagers will face hard times in their life. It might be due to poverty, lack of parents care or any other things. They might start hanging out with the wrong people, which might involve them in smoking. Sooner or later, they will start drinking, and then try on the softer drugs. As time goes on, they will start to do harder and more dangerous drugs, and their mind will not be satisfied if they are not taking the drugs. They will end up being a drug addict. These kind of people usually ends up in jails and those who doesnt have a good mental strength might turn into a psychopath. Being a psychopath is usually because of the environment that the person is living in. People might not welcome them in society, and they dont have much friends to talk to when they have problems. They might get angry fast and do dangerous things like hurting others or even commit suicide without thinking twice about it. There are also some things that can be affected by both nature and nurture. Take cancer for example. Some cancers can be hereditary. Breast cancer is a very dangerous cancer for women and it does pass on to your children. Girls whose mothers suffer from breast cancer will have a 60% chance of getting it too. But there are also cancers which arent hereditary, like lung cancer. Lung cancer is usually the effect from smoking. Again, smoking is usually resulted from nurture, or environment. Friends will always try to force you to smoke, and if you dont, you might not be welcomed in the society. There are also things that are affected by nature and nurture at the same time. Like professional athlethes. David Beckham, a 35 year old English football player is a fantastic sport. He has been playing professionally since he was 17 years old. His wife, Victoria Beckham was a singer in the group called Spice Girls. His son, Brooklyn Joseph Beckham is now 11 year old. He is very talented in football. His father has been training him a lot and he also goes to football school. Not suprisingly, Brooklyn Beckham can also sing. Even though he is not a professional singer, he likes to sing at home to his parents. Brooklyn has the talents inherited from his parents, and of course, the environment help, like the football school. Talents are wasted if they are not trained well, so you need both nature and nurture together to make something perfect. Andhika Pradana Grade 12

Judicial Bench and Racial Discrimination essays

Judicial Bench and Racial Discrimination essays Regardless of how people might promote the role of the judiciary in curbing racial discrimination, there will always be some people who would complain of lack of judicial assistance and some might even claim that justice system is designed to keep the racial order intact. Despite these claims, it is worth mentioning that over the years, courts in the United States have decided many cases of discrimination and while some may have appeared biased, most actually sought to curb or reduce racial discrimination in all facets of life. In this regard, we have the 9th, the 13th and the 14th amendments that were proposed by Congress and were repeatedly interpreted by the courts to give them meaning and to make it easier for people to understand what their rights were under these amendments. The ninth amendment was meant to protect the rights of those who are not specifically covered by the Constitution. But amendments or laws are nothing with interpretation and thus Supreme Court interpreted the ninth amendment on various occasions. In Griswold v. Connecticut (1965), the court explained: While the Ninth Amendment - and indeed the entire Bill of Rights - originally concerned restrictions upon federal power, the subsequently enacted Fourteenth Amendment prohibits the States as well from abridging fundamental personal liberties. And, the Ninth Amendment... is surely relevant in showing the existence of other fundamental personal rights, now protected from state, as well as federal, infringement. Similarly the courts again invoked the ninth amendment in the famous case of Roe v. Wade where the decision went in favor of a "Ninth Amendment right to choose to have an abortion."[Roe v Wade, 1970] Apart from the ninth amendment, we also have the 13th amendment that seeks to protect property rights of all minorities thereby reducing the chance of racial discrimination in the disposal of property. The amendment seeks to abolish slavery and any...

The US Cyberspace - Emerging Threats Research Paper

The US Cyberspace - Emerging Threats - Research Paper Example The American government altered the way it dealt with the business and financial activities. American government realized that the design of cybersecurity plays the main part and it must be efficient enough to protect a country’s information. Cyberspace must be defended by implementing the latest security standards and technologies which offer comprehensive protection.    The nations that oppose America have started targeting their systems by means of cyber threats and attacks. They aim at attacking the security system by creating threats that result in problems like system crash and data loss.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚   This, in turn, affects the country’s growth and eventually leads to various other problems. The American government and private organizations work together to protect the communication systems. The nature of these attacks must be analyzed so that the executives can rectify the problem by utilizing the required software.   Ã‚   Though the government implements critical systems, that cannot be easily attacked, there are certain features which even those critical systems lack. The technological development has created both a negative and positive impact on these security systems. The flaws in these systems make it easy for the intruders to attack them.   Cyberspace is a dynamic environment where changes take place every now and then. Hence the security system must be updated regularly to work well with these new inventions. Else it would become a tough task for the security systems to deal with various threats. The objective of a security system does not end with protecting the government and its related operations. Instead, it concentrates on the entire country’s safety and security. Hence these systems must be efficient enough to handle any type of threat and attack. Unauthorized access of the data and intruding into a system has become a common task. There are people who are professionally trained to intrude into such security systems. The systems that control the government and its related activities are the most targeted ones.

Anatomical features - Essay Example The â€Å"Lucy† skeleton found at hadar Ethiopia and Dikika also found in Ethiopia. Other features like Footprints and others discovered by paleoanthropologist proved that certain creatures lived on earth millions of years ago before we were born. Australopithecus afarensis is one of the extinct creatures discovered by Paleoanthropologists. Its remains were found in Ethiopia and it lived between close to 4 million years ago (Walter 2002). It was slenderly built. It is believed that A. afarensis was more closely related to modern human species, Homo sapiens The most famous fossil is the partial skeleton named Lucy (3.2 million years old) found by Donald Johanson and colleagues (Esteban 2007). In life, Lucy had a height of roughly 1.1 meters and its weight was about 30 kilograms. Lucys skeleton gave signs that she was bipedal. The shape of lucys pelvis was a good reason to believe that she was bipedal. Another proves is femurs angle from hip socket to the knee joint, her skull was the same size as that of a chimpanzee (Esteban 2007). Lucy had one pelvic bone and made it difficult to tell the gender The feet of Lucy were far apart, and each hind leg descends straight to the ground beneath the hip socket. The tibiae drop straight to the ground. Lucy teeth were resemblance to that of modern human. She had canine same size like that of human being. Fingers were curved in such away that it suggests they grasp branches as they climb. Its iliac blades were short and seem wide. Its sacrum was wide and positioned directly behind the hip joint. Lucy had had much smaller and more v-shaped jaws. The footprints found in volcanic ash were similar to features of human leg phalanges and proved o be a creature similar to human. Ardipithecus is a fossil hominoid, described by its discoverers as a very early hominin genus. Aramidus lived about 4.4 million years ago. It was Like

Do countries that vote against the US trade less with the US Research Paper

Do countries that vote against the US trade less with the US - Research Paper Example The last report compiled in 2011 confirmed that these countries typically contradict US efforts at the UN. Trade relations between the US and countries, which continually oppose US initiatives at the UN, are significantly stringent. Some of the most affected countries by such stringent trade and economic relations with the US include Syria and Iran. Notably, countries, which vote against the US at the UN typically, trade less with the US. This paper will provide a succinct description of how countries that oppose the US at the UN have stringent trade relations with the US. Bilateral trade relations and tax treaties are established in order to assist countries enhance their foreign direct investment, as well as foreign affiliate activities through dual taxation relief. However, in order for countries to enjoy such benefits, they must have amiable relations, both politically and economically. These benefits are only part of the advantages enjoyed by countries having amiable political a nd economic relations that facilitate fluid trade transactions. ... As a world super power, the US relatively requires that countries support its proposals at the UN (Worlton, Reynolds, and Stinebower 215). Therefore, when countries vote against the US at the UN, the US pulls out or reduces its monetary support for such countries or reduces its trade with the nation, as well. Syria has presently voted against the US at least 67% of the time. This move has detrimentally affected Syria’s relations with the US, particularly with regard to the political and economic relations. As a consequence, trade between Syria and the US has suffered rather significantly. Prior to the 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks meted towards the US, Syria’s relations with the US were quite amiable. In fact, after the attacks, Syria provided intelligence to assist the US track Al Qaeda plans (Worlton, Reynolds, and Stinebower 219). However, Syria’s contradiction of the US efforts to initiate war against Iraq started the long progression of deteriorated re lations between Syria and the US. Another serious contention between the US and Syria emerged when the Syrian government refused to provide assistance to foreign fighters to make use of the Syrian borders to infiltrate Iraq (Elliott 58). The US is also concerned by Syria’s efforts to interfere in the affairs of Lebanon, Syria’s protection of the control of Palestinian rejectionist groups located in Damascus. Other issues of contention include Syria’s human rights record, as well as the countries pursuit of weapons of mass destruction (McLean and Whang 439). This last issue is one of the most critical areas of contention between the US and Syria, and remains a thorny issue at the UN. The US

Elephant in the room Essay Example for Free

Elephant in the room Essay There are many aspects about rural schools that make them less fortunate than other types of schools. The actual environment of rural schools sometimes makes it hard for their students to succeed. Poverty is the 600 pound gorilla that is sitting on rural schools (Berliner, 2004). Rural schools are dependent on national and urban economics, and if the economy is not prospering, this also how rural schools fail. Because these schools are geographically and culturally isolated due to their locations, they usually lack the conditions that non-rural schools have. In addition, the location of these rural schools forces them to use more effort in order to network with people and to get the materials needed for teachers and students. Recently, farms in rural areas have been diminishing, and rural policy no longer has to be equated with farm policy. Furthermore, rural areas have previously depended on their schools as a focus of life, but this has changed and the future has become different. The school is now expected to prepare students for a different society than traditional rural environments, which creates an imbalance in ideals and traditions (Stern, 1994). We must view rural schools and communities as integrated social structures. Poverty is another problem that exists in rural schools, although it varies by region. We are in need of a federal policy to recognize the diversity of rural populations and give provisions for resources unavailable because of a lack of funding. There are three levels of funding provided by the government(local, state, and federal) that add to educational spending. If rural schools are to give the same services to their students as larger schools, the cost of program per person would be higher, but these schools do not receive extra money (DeYoung, 1991). Rural schools face poor conditions that their students are exposed to on a daily basis. For example, these schools lack the facilities, course materials, and programs that wealthier districts have. The problem with resources in rural schools is not availability of information, but the diversity of their settings. A critical factor as to why rural schools have such problems is the funding that they receive. Due to the small size of these schools, they tend to get less money from the government, but even when they get the same funding as non-rural districts, this is not enough due to the unique problems that rural schools are faced with. Because of the lack of funding, the condition of the schools is terrible. Usually rural schools have dilapidated buildings, which makes the learning environment unsafe and not motivating for the students. Since schools do not have sufficient funding, they are not able to tailor programs to the students needs, such as Advanced Placement and Honors classes as well as remedial and special education classes, which creates problems for these students. Furthermore, the materials that rural schools are provided with are out of date, and technological improvements such as computers and internet access are not available in most rural areas (Gibbs, 2000). Since the conditions of rural schools are not motivating to students they may experience.

Cinematic Interpretation of Stepping Razor Red X: the Peter Tosh Story :: essays papers

Cinematic Interpretation of "Stepping Razor Red X": the Peter Tosh Story Films are designed for numerous purposes, some entertain, frighten, enlighten, educate, inspire, and most make us think about the world we live in. This paper will be focused on the cinematic interpretation of the film "Stepping Razor Red X", the Peter Tosh Story. The makers of a film from the writer, director, cinematographer and the art director, design, and conceptualize what they want the viewer to see. Movie makers have agendas. They get their ideas across by using cinematic techniques and styles which make us view a certain subject in the light that they put it in. I will discuss the differing techniques used by the makers of "Stepping Razor" and describe what the overall impression of the movie has on the viewer, and what the agenda of the director is. Genre "Genre: A group of films having recognizably similar plots, character types, settings, filmic techniques, and themes." (Konigsberg:165) The Genre of this film is difficult to define because it is not composed of a single agenda. The director makes a point of talking about Tosh’s life, but because of the cinematic themes and the film’s style it is not solely a documentary. This film is also a multimedia film because elements of music and concert footage are added to the essential plot. This film is avant-garde in it’s nature. "Avant-garde [refers to films that] deny the traditional narrative structure and techniques of commercial films by seeking to explore new modes of visual and emotional experience." (Konigsberg:25) It could be considered an anthology film, because of the various concert footage that is woven throughout the movie. "An Anthology film is a full length film made up of excerpts from other films which are related by some theme [or] the appearance of the same performer." (Konigsberg:16) "Stepping Razor" also has elements of Cinema Verite. "Cinema Verite†¦applies to a series of documentary films which strive for immediacy, spontaneity, and authenticity through the use of portable and unobtrusive equipment and the avoidance of and preconceived narrative line or concepts concerning the material." (Konigsberg:57) "Stepping Razor" may also be put under the category of art film. "Art film [is] a type of film with serious artistic intentions as distinct from the commercial films made in Hollywood."(Konigsberg:20) This film also has elements of a propaganda film. "Propaganda films [are] made with the intention of persuading the audience to a particular point of view concerning the subject†¦relying on the apparently real and factual nature of the images on the screen and often using an authoritative voice-over to sway.

Weapons of the Middle Ages :: History

Weapons of the Middle Ages Have you ever wondered what kinds of weapons were used in the middle ages? Or have you wondered how they used to slash and bash through the heavily armored knights while being attacked by flying arrows by the longbowman? Well here are the answers There were a wide variety of weapons in the middle ages, one of which was the club. The club was mainly used to crush bones or fracture them. It was made of a light wood with a metal tip on the end and usually had spikes on them to inflict more damage. The club is the first melee weapon ever made and started in the Stone Age to kill deer or wild boar. As ages went by the club became less effective. After about 1400 A.D. the club was very rare to find in battle. What was interesting about the club is that it could easily be changed into a short-handled ax. All they had to do was either cut or take off the tip of the club and attach a sharp blade. The reason they sometimes changed the club into a short-handled ax, was because it could be throw n easily and inflict some pain, where the club when thrown, it was hard to throw and it inflicted little pain and damage. Another very useful weapon was the spear. The spear was a skirmisher’s best friend. A skirmisher was a soldier that carried around a bag full of spears. To keep from giving too much weight, they made the spear for the skirmishers with very lightweight wood, and a small pointy spearhead. The skirmisher’s job was to take the spears and throw them at a long range. The difference between a bow and arrow and a spear was that the spear could easily be turned into a melee weapon. In fact, when a skirmisher had only one spear left, he took the spear, left the bag, and went melee style and went into the battle. The first spear was simply a sharpened rock tied onto a long stick, which was in the Stone Age, and wasn’t used for killing people; it was used to kill animals for food, usually. Probably the most common weapon, was the sword. All kinds of swords, the standard sword, which was just a regular sword, the dagger, or knife, yes it was a type of sword, mainly a backup sword used if a soldier’s weapon was dropped, and the great sword, which was a huge sword that can only be used in control if the soldier used two hands.

The Accounting Profession In Society Accounting Essay

Accounting has traditionally been viewed by society as drilling, boring and humdrum figure crunching. Consequently, pupils who have perceived that they are non ‘good with Numberss ‘ may hold steered off from accounting as a major class of survey and as a calling pick. Initially, the literature reappraisal examines secondary school pupils ‘ perceptual experiences of the work of an comptroller and the accounting profession. It is followed with a reappraisal of the cardinal factors act uponing pupils ‘ perceptual experiences. Last, the position of accounting compared to other professions will be examined.2.2 The Accounting profession in societyTypically, comptrollers have been referred to as figure crunchers, concentrating on numerical truth, everyday recording and computation methods ( Parker, 2000 ) . Albrecht and Sack ( 2000 ) , Cory ( 1992 ) , and Garner and Dombrowski ( 1997 ) attributed these negative perceptual experiences to misinformation or deficiency o f information about what accounting is and the nature of the responsibilities that comptrollers performed. Napier and Carnegie ( 2007 ) noted that accounting has been described as an progressively societal pattern instead than a proficient pattern as it competes with other professional groups and businesss to pull and retain endowments. As a calling, accounting has come under examination in many ways ( Ajibolade, 2008 ; Adeyeye et al. , 2010 ) , peculiarly in epochs of corporate prostration. Research conducted by Mladenovic ( 2000 ) showed that pupils tend to comprehend accounting as chiefly numerical, nonsubjective and non-controversial, and are less able to comprehend the importance of originative opinion and communicating accomplishments for comptrollers. In Malaysia, several surveies have shown that accounting professions are still popular amongst the pupils ( Goon, 1975, Samidi and Tew 1995 ; Hashim et Al, 2003 and Said et al. , 2004 ) . For illustration: Goon ( 1975 ) found that the bulk of her respondents had chosen accounting as a profession. Samidi and Tew ( 1995 ) reported that the profession is still the most popular pick 20 old ages subsequently. Said et Al. ( 2004 ) found that the accounting profession ranked amongst the two most preferable callings given by the public and private university pupils. Mladenovic ( 2000 ) found that Australian university pupils tend to comprehend accounting as chiefly numerical, nonsubjective and non-controversial, with an affinity towards mathematics and statistics. Futhermore, surveies conducted in the USA, Canada and the UK ( Luscombe, 1988 ; Cohen & A ; Hanno, 1993 ; Fisher & A ; Murphy, 1995 ) show that many pupils form an feeling that ‘accountants are dull, deadening figure crunchers. ‘ Furthermore, surveies in the US have found that secondary school pupils believe that a grade in accounting would be utile to person who wants disputing work ( 74 % ) , or to be President or CEO of a major company ( 81 % ) ( Hartwell et al. 2005 ) . Hartwell et Al. ‘s ( 2005 ) survey besides found that contrary to the stereotype, merely 39 % of respondents agreed that accounting is predictable and stays the same, while 56 % indicated that accounting would be utile for person who wants assortment in work. The accounting profession certifies certain degrees of expertness, instruction, and experience of single comptrollers and these enfranchisements can be added to their list of certificates so the client can anticipate a certain degree of competency. Accountancy is one of the prima professions, good sought after by many in society today. For some clip, as a calling, it has enjoyed a comparative advantage in footings of wage, prestigiousness and occupation satisfaction.2.3 Images of comptrollersHarmonizing to the AICPA ( 2000 ) , most pupils can non accurately depict the work of comptrollers, their duties or the chances available in the accounting profession. These positions are farther supported by a figure of writers. Cobbs ( 1976 ) belittles the profession for neglecting to inform the populace on what comptrollers do and inquiries the ability of the profession to make so. Parker ( 2000 ) blames the ineffectualness of professional organic structure advertisement on the deficiency of a pprehension, and Smith & A ; Briggs ( 1999 ) blame inaction of the profession on the hapless perceptual experience. McMurdy ( 1997 ) sees the linguistic communication used by comptrollers as confounding the populace and maintaining them in the dark about what accounting is. Assorted research studies have been conducted to find how scholars ( who are still at school ) and pupils ( who are analyzing at third establishments ) perceive the work of the comptroller. Students and scholars perceive comptrollers to be reasonably isolated ( Oswick, Barber & A ; Speed 1994 ; Coate, Mitschow & A ; Schinski 2003 ; Heiat, Brown & A ; Johnson 2007:96 ) , tiring ( Cohen & A ; Hanno 1993, Hunt et Al. 2004 ; Byrne & A ; Willis 2005 ; Heiat et Al. 2007:96 ) , formal and introspective persons ( Coate et al. 2003 ) , concerned with item ( Hunt et al. 2004 ) and compliance-driven ( Byrne & A ; Willis 2005 ) . Research workers have besides concluded that small or no advancement has been made in chase awaying the uncomplimentary image of comptrollers, despite the profession ‘s representation of modern-day accounting patterns as dynamic environments necessitating people with creativeness and critical thought accomplishments ( as depicted in table 1 ) ( Fisher & A ; Murphy 1995 ; Mladenovic 2000 ; Coate et Al. 2003 ; Byrne & A ; Willis 2005 ) . But other research, major accounting houses grew really rapidly during the 1980s. The proportion of university alumnuss come ining traineeships with accounting houses peaked at over 10 % in 1987 and is presently running at about 8 % . In other several surveies in the instruction literature besides have identified that pupils shared a common belief that the accounting environment offer a higher supply of occupations compared to other countries of concern ( Paolillo and Estes, 1982 ; Wheeler, 1983 ; Cangelosi et al. , 1985 ; Kochanek and Norgaard, 1985 ) . Of effect, such belief plays an of import function in taking their calling determinations in accounting. Students frequently perceived accounting calling as extremely honoring in footings of finance and position. These perceptual experiences frequently come from their collegiate experiences. However, these perceptual experiences in world may non be true.2.4 Percepts of Accounting Study at SchoolThe demand to enroll pupils interested in accounting as a profession, has led many research workers garnering grounds from high school pupils in relation to the exposure they have received about accounting. Byrne and Willis ( 2005 ) found that the chief factors to act upon secondary school pupils ‘ perceptual experiences of accounting were the survey of the topic in school, the factual media and their instructors. In the Byrne and Willis ( 2005 ) survey, pupils who were analyzing accounting at secondary school had a less negative image of accounting compared to those non analyzing accounting. However they still held a traditional position of the profession and of the work of the comptroller. Byrne and Willis ( 2005 ) found that the ground for the findings was due to the fact that the nature of the accounting teaching method being experienced by secondary school pupils was non significantly chase awaying preexistent negative perceptual experiences or giving them a realistic feeling of accounting patterns. In fact, anterior research undertaken by Byrne and Willis ( 2001 ) into the secondary school accounting class provides grounds that secondary schools emphasized mechanical clerking and appraisal advancing rote acquisition. This attack is likely to corroborate instead than dispute pupils ‘ traditional stereotyped position of the work of an comptroller and the profession. Byrne and Willis ( 2005 ) recommended that the profession should seek to act upon the content of the course of study in secondary schools to guarantee that the work of an comptroller is seen as less definite, precise and conformity driven and more interesting. These determination are similar to that of Inman ‘s et al. ‘s. ( 1989 ) survey. Students ‘ experiences with uninteresting accounting coursework and rote acquisition may besides deter the best pupils from prosecuting an accounting major ( Inman et al, 1989 ) . Students are more likely to take an accounting major when they consider accounting interesting and gratifying ( Saeman & A ; Crooker, 1999 ) . Tan and Laswad ( 2009 ) showed that a higher proportion of accounting pupils than other concern pupils decide on their major prior to university survey. Therefore they recommended that the profession should advance the positive facets of an accounting calling non merely to pre-university pupils but besides to the populace, as this scheme would heighten the public profile of members of the profession. There is grounds to propose that the accounting course of study in secondary schools may be playing a portion in footings of pupils ‘ perceptual experiences of account ing, which may non needfully bespeak the true nature of the profession.2.5 How to give a positive perceptual experience of Accounting to pupils?Harmonizing to Albrecht and Sack ( 2000 ) , one manner to increase the figure of pupils majoring in accounting would be for the profession to pass on more efficaciously what occupations comptrollers really perform. The broad scope of calling options available to comptrollers should be emphasized peculiarly to high school pupils and college fresher. By efficaciously pass oning the properties of an accounting calling, the widespread perceptual experience that the work is deadening and uninteresting should be countered. Another manner to successfully enroll pupils to accounting is to emphasize the long-run fiscal wagess and occupations security of the profession. It appears that those who choose to major in accounting realize that possible exists for both a high income and stable employment in their callings. Given the recent negative imperativeness environing the accounting profession, layoffs and ethical jobs could finally turn out to be a much bigger barrier to choice of an accounting major that has traditionally been perceived. The horror narratives of failed callings of Anderson employees may good hold a negative impact on accounting registrations, because accounting big leagues place a high accent on occupation security. Finally, comptrollers must be wise and proactive in keeping the image of accounting as a esteemed profession. Failing to turn to the recent moving ridge of dirts is the wrong attack. They need to pass on that the accounting profession has historically been regarded as the prot otype of ethical and professional behavior and that the profession will one time once more rise to the challenges it faces today. The AICPA and some province societies have introduced several plans and selling stuffs designed to pull pupils to accounting. Employers and universities besides have a interest in pulling pupils to accounting callings. L.Hartwell, S.Lightle and Maxwell suggested that enrolling attempts should get down early and should stress the ambitious nature of accounting work and supply specific information about get downing wages. Rather than avoiding treatment of the recent accounting dirts, recruiters should see utilizing them as an illustration of the critical function accounting dramas in our capital markets. Change by reversaling the diminution in accounting registrations will non go on overnight, and can non be achieved in isolation. It will necessitate creativeness and cooperation among pedagogues and practicians, and perchance alterations in the profession itself. A particular undertaking force, Accounting Careers for Tomorrow ( ACT ) , have studied research and discussed the issues environing steep registration diminutions in college accounting plans. They determined that the WICPA must make consciousness of calling chances among high school pupils, and instructors, every bit good as others. ACT has concluded that the WICPA and its members must bring forth these positive perceptual experiences about the profession: Accounting is a profession, non a occupation Accounting is interesting, disputing and strategic An Accounting grade is a good footing for a calling2.6 Status of Accounting Compared with Other ProfessionsStudents are more likely to draw a bead on to a calling that is held in high regard by society. Irish high school pupils ranked comptrollers behind physicians, attorneies, tooth doctors and designers as professionals ( Byrne & A ; Willis, 2005 ) . However, in the Byrne and Willis ( 2005 ) study the existent ranking of accounting as a profession varied between accounting pupils ( who ranked it 5th ) and non-accounting pupils ( who ranked it 7th ) of 10 professional classs. In the US the Gallup Organisation ( 1991 ) reported that university pupils rated the profession last among the six professions of jurisprudence, medical specialty, instruction, technology, fiscal planning and accounting. In a New Zealand survey integrating the positions of high school instructors, the consequences showed that the accounting profession was of lower ranked societal position to the professions of jurisprudence, medical specialty and technology ( Wells & A ; Fieger, 2005 ) .2.7 Percept on prosecuting professional scrutinySome accounting pupils think that it is hard to go through the professional accounting programmes and merely few finalists passed with merely one effort ( Omar, 2009 ) . Jackling ( 2002 ) , examined Australian undergraduate pupils and discovered that skewed images toward the accounting profession has led to a failure in pulling pupils with creativeness and people-oriented personalities that are so urgently sought by the profession. Some pupils besides believed that professional accounting programmes are more hard than degree programmes, hence it is merely suited for those who are disciplined and extremely committed pupils and merely those with first-class cumulative clas s point sum ( CGPA ) can prosecute professional accounting programmes ( Omar, 2009 ) . Some pupils feel that it is better for them to prosecute other programmes instead than professional accounting programmes because of these perceptual experience that they heard, chiefly about the figure of efforts that most of the professional accounting pupils needed to do in order to finish the professional survey ( Omar, 2009 ) . This shows that pupils still have bad perceptual experience toward the professional accounting programmes. Harmonizing to the survey by Mazlina & A ; Mohammad ( 2012 ) , questionnaires used was adapted by Omar ( 2009 ) . They were distributed to 120 concluding twelvemonth accounting pupils in a public university in Malaysia. Majority of the respondents were female pupils than male pupils and about 69.9 % of the respondents were female and most of them ( 96.2 % ) were individual. The survey suggested that near to 70 % of the respondents would wish to work instantly after graduation and another 30 % would wish to prosecute their surveies after graduation. This determination suggested the importance of accounting lectors and practicians, every bit good as the related ministry to actively advancing and supplying information about being the professional comptrollers to the pupils, in order to positively act upon their perceptual experience and pull them to be a professional.2.7.1 Skill demands to be an effectual comptrollerProfessional accounting organic structures have long been recommending that in order to go a member of that profession, specific accomplishments should be acquired. Table 1 summarises the accomplishments demands of the undermentioned professional accounting organic structures: the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia ( ICAA ) , the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants ( CICA ) , the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales ( ICAEW ) , the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants ( AICPA ) , the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants ( NZICA ) and the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants ( SAICA ) .Generic accomplishmentsICAA ( 2011 )CICA ( 2011 )ICAEW ( 2011 )AICPA ( 2011 )NZICA ( 2011 )SAICA ( 2011 )Problem work outing****Communication******Strategic thinking/ alteration direction*****Business consciousness****Professional and proficient ability******IT skills*****Report writing/ presentation**Table 1: Skills demandsFrom this list of accomplishments demands ( table 1 ) , it can be deduced that comptrollers need to be effectual communicators, able to believe and move strategically, able to work out jobs, be cognizant of concern issues and be professionally and technically competent. The accountant therefore demands to hold satisfactory interpersonal accomplishments because of the regular interaction with clients, to be originative in work outing jobs, doing determinations and planning for the hereafter and to be effectual communicators.2.8 Key Factors Influencing Perceptions of the Accounting ProfessionThe accounting instruction literature has suggested that pupils ‘ perceptual experience derived from assorted beginnings. Several factors have been linked to influences on a pupil ‘s calling pick in accounting. Harrison ( 1998 ) points out that it is non merely pupils ‘ ain perceptual experiences that affect their calling determinations but besides the perceptual experiences of those around them. The 12 factors that influenced the pupils ‘ determ inations included calling chances, involvement in the topic, teacher, money, parents, enjoyment, old experience, life manner offered because of the calling, challenge, prestigiousness, utility in runing a concern, and other pupils. Therefore pupils may be influenced by their instructors at school, parents, relations or friends. However, anterior research on the impact of instructors on a pupil ‘s determination to major in accounting has produced inconclusive and assorted consequences. Some surveies have shown that instructors do non play a important function in pupils ‘ pick of big leagues ( Cangelosi et al. , 1985 ; Gul et al. , 1989 ) . In contrast, other surveies ( e.g.Paolillo and Estes 1982 ; Hermanson and Hermanson 1995 ; Geiger and Ogilby 2000 ; Mauldin et al. , 2000 ) have found referents to hold an influence on pupils ‘ determination to major. The grounds sing the influence of others, e.g. parents and friends is besides inconclusive. Other surveies have besides examined pupils ‘ perceptual experience on the accounting calling. One issue being examined is the standards in taking accounting as a calling ( Carpenter and Strawser, 1970 ; Poallilo and Estes, 1982 ; Haswell and Holmes, 1988 ; Gul et al. , 1989 ; Carcello et al. , 1991 ; DeZoort et al. , 1997 ) . These surveies by and large found salary as one of the top five standards act uponing calling determination ( Carpenter and Strawser, 1970 ; Haswell and Holmes, 1988 ; Gul et al. , 1989 ; Horowitz and Riley, 1990 ) . Specifically, Carpenter and Strawser ( 1970 ) found that the top 5 standards are foremost, nature of work, followed by chances for promotion, get downing salary, working status and occupation security. On the other manus, Haswell and Holmes ( 1988 ) found occupation handiness as the top standard, followed by chances of publicity, wage, occupation security and occupation satisfaction. Paollio and Estes ( 1982 ) found that handiness of employment as the most of import factor. Net incomes possible, old ages of instruction required, aptitude for the topic and instructor influence have a greater impact on calling pick for comptrollers compared to the other professional groups. Other surveies found that chance for advancement considerations to be act uponing the pick of a calling in accounting ( Trump and Hendrikson, 1970, Barnhart, 1971, Zikmund et al. 1977 ) . Shivaswamy and Hanks ( 1985 ) reported that occupation security is ranked first by accounting pupils in their survey. Kim et al. , ( 2002 ) conducted a survey on concern big leagues ( e.g. accounting, finance, general concern, direction, selling, MIS/CIS, and dual major ) . They discovered that the top five grounds for taking a major were: involvement in a calling associated with the major, good occupation chances, â€Å" good tantrum † with respondents ‘ abilities, a desire to run a concern some twenty-four hours, and projected net incomes in the related calling. The least selected grounds for taking a major were the repute of the major at the university, the sensed quality of direction, the parents ‘ influence, the sum and type of promotional information, and the influence of friends. Yayla and Cengiz, ( 2005 ) determined five factors that play a function in taking an accounting calling. Those factors were pupils ‘ ain pick, household and close environment consequence, interesting profession, net incomes outlooks and calling chances. In contrast, Dinc ( 2008 ) utilized factor analysis and determined the following seven chief factors in make up one's minding calling pick: great net incomes outlooks, calling outlooks, occupation experience, cognition and ability, household environment, societal position, and instruction environment. Factors as recounted above approximately taking a calling in accounting field or non can be divided into two chief groups: internal and external factors. The internal factors may include personal abilities, mathematical competence, and involvement in the field. These factors do non depend on the pupils ‘ geographical country. Whereas the external factors, such as calling chances, degree of salary a calling offers and the societal position that the calling would supply are variable in assorted geographical countries. For illustration, while there are good occupation chances in one geographical country, another geographical country may non offer the same chances.2.9 Gender EffectssTurner & A ; Bowen ( 1999 ) examined the gender spread in pick of major, specifically, the under-representation of adult females in the scientific disciplines and technology in the ninetiess. They suggest that this phenomenon may by cultural and that gender and socialisation skills/expectations may take males and females to hold different career-choice penchants. The Taylor Report ( 2000 ) states that compared to college pupils in general, accounting big leagues are more likely to be female. To the best of our cognition, merely two surveies to day of the month hold examined the chairing consequence of gender on the pick of business/accounting as a major. Leppel et Al. ( 2001 ) found that female pupils are more likely to be influenced in pick of major by a professional male parent, and that adult females from â€Å" high † socioeconomic backgrounds are less likely to major in concern. Both statements were found to be the opposite for males. Lowe & A ; Simons ( 1997 ) found that female accounting big leagues ranked â€Å" the built-in nature of the capable affair † more of import than did male accounting big leagues ; females in their survey placed a higher value on the â€Å" ability to win academically in the major, † in the major being â€Å" intellectually ambitious, † and in â€Å" coverage of interesting capable affair † in their determination to take a major. This was non true for all female respondents, merely those taking account ing as a major. Research into gender differences sing perceptual experiences of comptrollers indicate that males, compared with females, perceive the accounting profession as more interesting and necessitating a higher grade of interaction ( Heiat et al. 2007:94 ) . There have been some alterations in accounting. In New Zealand, chartered accountant rank Numberss for adult females have been lifting and adult females are more often going national councilors and other office carriers. However, even in the Institute adult females have still to make a place of equality with work forces. Womans may hold been able to come in the accounting profession but that has non needfully intend that they have been every bit successful as work forces in busying all countries of the profession. Wootten and Kemmerer agreed with Ciancanelli et Al. ( 1990 ) and Welsh ( 1992 ) that â€Å" gender transmutation of a work force does non needfully intend gender transmutation within a work force † . In New Zealand in 2001, Whiting & A ; Wright carried out a postal study of public comptrollers. From this they noted that merely five per centum of female respondents were spouses, or held tantamount senior places, while 40 per centum of male respondents were spouses. Womans in the United States were more involved in what was considered the less demanding and therefore lower paid scrutinizing work and less involved in the ego directed and independent countries of confer withing. They were non encouraged to set about high profile work or cover straight with clients. Whether or non these businesss required university degree makings, adult females have been over represented in them. In New Zealand in 1984, about 70 per centum of the full-time labor force in clerking and cashier-type businesss were female as were 90 three per centum of parttime bookkeepers and tellers. Today adult females are over-represented in the College of Accounting Technician within the New Zealand Institute. The b ulk of New Zealand chartered comptrollers are still male and most accounting technicians are female. In New Zealand throughout the 20th century, there have normally been a higher per centum of adult females than work forces in professional businesss. However, surveies of these figures have systematically revealed that the bulk of the professions have remained male dominated and adult females have concentrated in a few professional businesss. Davies and Jackson showed the significance of the rise in Numberss of adult females in these once male dominated professions in New Zealand between 1971 and 1991. For illustration, the legal profession had a 12 hundred per centum addition in adult females going attorneies in those twenty old ages, while dental medicine had an eight hundred and forty one per centum addition. Accounting ‘s addition was a somewhat smaller at seven hundred and 30 eight per centum. Many professions showed similar rises with most being of a proportion that was greater than one hundred per centum.
